In summer, we are very clear that hair needs specific care to avoid alterations caused by changes in sun exposure and temperature. Winter seems to be ignored... But we must not forget that in winter hair care must also be specific!
How winter affects our hair
In winter, there are characteristic temperature and dryness conditions that we must control if we don't want them to control the appearance of our hair.
Low temperatures will decrease blood flow to the scalp by causing slight vasoconstriction if we spend a lot of time outdoors without protection. In addition, the oil glands are also working at half power. All of this can worsen scalp conditions such as dermatitis or psoriasis.
To compensate for the cold, we increase the use of heating and hair dryers, which damage the hair and its cuticles. They are the cause of hair looking dry and dull.
Furthermore, dry air will enhance static electricity by reacting against the hair's charges, which are stronger the more damaged it is!
How should I care for my hair so it looks perfect in winter too?
Obviously there's no magic, no tricks that will make you take off a hat and have your hair show all its splendor and volume, but there are ways to prevent it from looking dry and brittle.
1. Protect your scalp from the cold. Remember that its use will never worsen hair growth, as nutrients come from blood vessels deep within. This way you will prevent a possible increase in hair loss and also better control of dermatitis outbreaks.
2. Boost preventive treatments, mainly with anti-seborrheic dermatitis shampoos or for sensitive scalp. On other days, always choose moisturizing shampoos for frequent use.
3. Use products with moisturizing ingredients. Good options are olive oil, argan oil or coconut oil, keratin or aloe vera. And don't forget to apply serum and hair mask frequently.
4. NEVER forget your heat protectant before using a hair dryer or straightener. This applies even if you are a man.
5. If you can moderate the temperature of your heating and hair dryer, you'll be doing something good for your hair and also for the environment!
